Donaldson family surprise son at Comm Games
By MATT RICHENS in Delhi – Fairfax Media
Angus Donaldson did not know if his mum Marie and twin sister were going to make it to his first Commonwealth Games fight.
He knew they were en route to Delhi, but had not seen them before his first lightweight bout.
Unbeknown to him they had taken a 19-hour train ride to get there and arrived just before he started.
The first Donaldson, son of All Black Mark ”Bullet” Donaldson, noticed was when he heard his twin Louise’s voice screaming for him.
”It’s funny, you hear lots of voices and you know which ones to block out, but when I heard her and knew they had made it, that really spurred me on.
”It makes you focus more and it helped me lift my intensity and box smart.” Donaldson won his first fight against Gambian Ensa Jammeh 7-1 to get past the first round after he was dealt a difficult draw. There are 34 fighters in the lightweight class and 30 got a first-round bye, but not Donaldson.
”It worked out okay in the end, I got to see my next opponent from Northern Ireland.”
Donaldson stated it was a relief to get his first fight out of the way, but he had been pleased with how he kept his emotions in check.
“Staying focused and not getting overawed was a really huge thing for me and I managed to do that, it’s confidence building.
Donaldson’s team-mates Anthony Taylor (light welter weight) and Nathon McKewen (middleweight) both won on points.
Coach Billy Meehan was delighted and admitted he did not anticipate to pick up three wins on the first day of competition.
The badminton team had another stellar day and have already qualified for the quarterfinals of the teams event.
The Kiwis’ pool is the closest of the teams’ event, but they recorded their second and third wins of the tournament beating Sri Lanka and Northern Ireland.
Going into the blended doubles in the Sri Lankan tie both countries had two wins apiece but Donna Haliday and Danielle Barry clinched it for the Kiwis with a straight sets win.
Both Joelle King and Jaclyn Hawkes won through to the quarterfinals of the women’s squash singles tournament, but the last Kiwi man in the field Campbell Grayson was eliminated in straight sets, Christchurch’s Sam Belkin completed out of the medals in the 96kg Greco-Roman event. He lost his quarter final, but won his reperchage bout. He was one win away from fighting for the bronze, but narrowly lost to a Canadian wrestler.
Weightlifter Cameron Sinclair broke three New Zealand records, one of them twice, as he completed 11th in the 62kg class. Another New Zealand record holder and third time Commonwealth Games lifter Kate Howard completed sixth in the women’s 53kgs.
In archery, only top Kiwi hope Shaun Teasdale made it through to the quarterfinals in the men’s compound in what was a disappointing day.
Steve Clifton and Tony Waddick missed out. Stephanie Croskery, Mandy McGregor and Elizabeth Mitchell were all knocked out before the last eight.
