NZ men’s eight impress at world rowing champs

AARON GOILE AT LAKE KARAPIRO – Waikato Times

The New Zealand men’s eight in action at the World Rowing Championships on Lake Karapiro.

LATEST: The New Zealand men’s eight have launched themselves as a real medal prospect for the World Rowing Championships after a very impressive showing in their heat at Lake Karapiro this morning.

New Zealand completed second after pushing world champions Germany hard right until the finish line, before being pipped by 0.78 seconds.

The Germans recorded 5:24.62 and go straight to the final, with New Zealand and third placegetters China heading to the repechage, where they will need to finish first or second out of four crews, to make their way into the final.

New Zealand’s crew of Adam Tripp, Tyson Williams, Ian Seymour, Tobias Wehr-Candler, Michael Arms, Sean O’Neill, Chris Harris, Ben Hammond and cox Ivan Pavich have only been training together since the trials in August but will be full of confidence now, having put up a tremendous effort against the reigning world champions.

The other crew straight through to the final is Great Britain after they won the second heat in 5:25.34.

Australia and the US will head to the repechage after finishing second (2.60s behind) and third (3.23) respectively.

The New Zealand women’s eight have also secured a spot in the repechage after finishing third in their heat.

New Zealand’s 6:11.81 was was good enough to keep Germany to fourth spot.

Canada won in 6:01.72 to advance to the final, and second placegetters Romania will join them after finishing second, 2.33s back.

The New Zealand crew of Louise Trappitt, Robyn Munro, Beatrix Heaphy-Hall, Paula Twining, Jessica Loe, Kelsey Bevan, Tarsha Williams, Harriet Austin and cox Frances Turner were in third spot throughout the whole race, down by 1.98s on leaders Canada at the 500m mark and 4.10 back at the half-way point, eventually finishing in 6:11.81.

New Zealand will race against the Netherlands in the repechage, after they completed third in the first heat.

The US were impressive in winning that heat in 6:00.52 and Great Britain qualified second, 4.86s back, to join them in the final.

Earlier, young German Karl Schulze became a surprise addition to the men’s single sculls semifinals, after taking out his repechage race.

The 22-year-old led early on the second of the day’s four repechage events, up by 2.86 seconds at the half-way mark, and going on to win in 6:56.21.

The world under-23 champion completed 0.95s ahead of 34-year-old Lassi Karonen from Sweden, who settled for second and also qualified for the semifinals, which will feature New Zealand’s Mahe Drysdale.

Australian Duncan Free came third, 7.51s back from Schulze, and missed out on advancing, however that was not a major surprise, with the 37-year-old more suited to sweep oar rowing, having won gold with Drew Gimm in the pairs at the 2008 Olympics.

In the first repechage Slovenia’s Luka Spik comfortably made it to the semifinals, powering away to win in 6:56.19.

Belgium’s Tim Maeyens (6:49.82) and Lithuania’s Mindaugas Griskonis (6:51.96) were the other repechage winners.

Others to advance in second place were China’s Zhang Liang, Estonia’s Tonu Endrekson and USA’s Kenneth Jurkowski.
